It can be referred to as the wonder bean. Yes, Soybean is a pulse rich in nutrition. Nutritionally, no other food compares with the nutritive quality of Soybean. Among all the vegetable sources it is the only vegetable that gives you all the proteins. What's more, protein-rich soy is compatible with any animal protein, which means it is at par with any non-vegetarian dietary source.

Soybean is especially useful in the management of diabetes, the sweet killer that is on the rise. However, the role of Soybean in diabetes management is not new. It was suggested in 1917 that Soybean helps in treating diabetes. Research over the past 83 years continues to support this, more particularly, the role in normalizing the blood glucose.

How does Soybean help?

Soybean is very low in glycemic index. Glycemic index is the blood glucose response of a food. This means when you eat Soybean your blood sugar levels do not rise much as compared to other foods. Hence Soybean, owing to the glycemic index, helps to control the disease.

In addition, Soybean is a very rich source of fibre. Add to this the fact that 30 per cent of the total fibre content is present in the form of soluble fibre that plays an important role in maintaining the blood sugar. Thus Soybean helps to control the blood sugar levels in both healthy as well as diabetic patients.

Soybean also helps in reducing the cholesterol levels, which helps in reducing the risk of heart disease in diabetics. Similarly soy proteins help in preventing kidney damage, which is highly prevalent in diabetics. It promotes the excess protein excretion in the urine.

Thus diabetics can easily exchange other proteins with Soybean in their diet. However, a health professional should be consulted before making any changes in the diet.
