So, you've decided to be daring: You're going to go for it and soar for the skies. Why not? After all, you were bored; you needed something to do, and this seems to be the perfect solution: Internet Dating!
Now that you've decided how you're going to spend all your newfound free time (although it's best not to use more than an hour or two a day) it's time to do everyone's dreaded task: filling out that profile!
Start with the basics.
Your name, age and where you live are the first things every profile should include, although you should be sure not to give out to much personal information.
A good example is:
* Name: Mary
* Age: 19
* State: Alaska
Don't provide a last name; many sites such as yellowbook.com can provide addresses and phone numbers with a last name, and the last thing you want is someone tracking you down to your house!
Now, let’s start with the not-so-basics. Question the site asks will vary by site, but could range from anything to your favorite books, color, and food. Again, refrain from putting too much information; basic, simple and truthful answers are always best.
* Favorite color: Blue
* Favorite thing to eat: Pizza
* Favorite song to dance to: I will survive
As you continue to fill out the profile with basics and not so basics, keep in mind that all information should be truthful and concise. Although lying about your favorite color may not seem like a big deal, lying about small things does break trust, and if you lie about small things, someone may find it hard to trust you with bigger things.
What else should your profile have?
* Who you’re looking for and what kind of relationship you’re willing to have
Craigslist.com is one of the few sites that separates relationships into different categories; most people will simply put this in your profile. You don’t want to date someone who wants only a short-term relationship if you’re looking for a long-term relationship.
* Children: Yes or no?
Even today, some people prefer not to have children. You can say yes, no, or prefer not to say.
* Current marital status
Single? Divorced? Remarried? Even though many sites won’t let you say, it’s best to be upfront on this one.
* Do you have children?
Best to be upfront about this one as well—someone will know!
Sometimes, websites will confront you with a questionnaire; you should be prepared for this.
Here’s a sample one from the dating site I was browsing:
* Nervous easily?
* Not easily embarrassed by others?
* My own thoughts/feelings scare me?
* Work to long/too hard?
* Productive person?
* Eat dinner at home or a restaurant?
* I want my children to speak English?
* Just looking for a friend?
* Do I take care of all the details (as apposed to just the basics?)
* My religion is important to me?
* Do I think highly of myself?
Be prepared to answer all the questions honestly and truthfully, and enjoy meeting new people. Got a picture? Upload it! (Be sure not to put in any identifying details, like your school name or a picture in front of your house.)
Remember, no matter how dumb the questions, how jokingly you take this, the most important is just to have fun!
