Gender Views on Throw Pillows

It seems only a matter of time before the scientific community discovers that anti-throw-pillow gene in men. It has to be there because nothing else really seems to explain the universal disdain that men have when it comes to these “essential” home accessories.
It gets us into trouble. Don’t even bother denying it, because you know it’s true. My wife and I recently attended a friend’s Super Bowl party. As the guests were taking their seats around the TV another guest (male) and I stood staring at the sofa. From end to end were artistically placed color coordinated throw pillows. We looked briefly at each other and without saying a word began removing the pillows and placing them on the floor.
Out of the blue I hear my wife say, “What are you doing?”
“What do you mean?” I said innocently. “Where were we supposed to sit.”
My anonymous friend then tried to defend me by adding, “The pillows were taking up all the space.”
The hostess then thankfully added with a shrug, “My husband moves the all the time also.”
Women think that throw pillows on sofas and beds are similar to jewelry or a good handbag which will put the finishing touches on an outfit. Men on the other hand think of them in terms of just one more thing to get in the way of them getting into bed.
When it comes to cost of custom throw pillows, well you men don’t even want to go there. I overheard my wife on the phone last week ordering some pillows she was having made and was shocked when I heard $40 per pillow.
Imagine how shocked I was when she got off the phone and I found out that was only for sewing them. It did not include the cost of fabric, fringe and filler for the pillows. I felt some lightheadedness and quickly got it under control. The last thing I needed was an emergency room bill on top of the bill for the pillows. Though thinking about it the emergency room would have probably cost less.
So today I am settling into my office chair getting ready to hunker down at my computer to get some work done and I hear our male dog out in the living room. I get up to look just in time to see him take his nose and root under the seven pillows, tunneling along the length of the couch while pushing them all onto the floor.
It was like some contest to see how quickly he could get them all on to the floor and at the end he just looked up at me with pride in his accomplishment.
I could not help but smile a little as I patted his head and congratulated him.
I will undoubtedly be getting blamed for this one. There is no way she’s going to believe the dog did it.
Throw pillows just have to be a chick thing.
