Good stress pushes us to perform our best and is essential to survive and grow. On the other hand, bad stress pulls us down and leads to mental and physical strain. It drains us out and makes us prone to diseases and illnesses.

Treatment

Chinese medicine says that although each one of us is different we can be grouped into specific types. Thus all of us fall into a type or maybe a combination of types. Chinese medicine approaches stress management through its concept of the five elements of wood, fire, earth, fire and water.
  • Wood type: The reaction of this type is shown by anger, frustration and tension. The physical signs are high blood pressure, digestive problems, PMS, and migraine problems.
  • Metal type: This type becomes rigid, perfectionist and judgmental. The physical signs are development of respiratory problems like asthma.
  • Earth: This type becomes obsessive and develops self-esteem problems. The physical signs are the development of digestive problems.
  • Water: These people withdraw into themselves and become fearful. On the physical level they develop problems like arthritis and back pain.
  • Fire: This type gets excited very easily and is mentally hyperactive. Physically they develop circulatory problems.
An acupuncturist thus strives to treat the reactions that the individual shows in order to help him with stress management. Stress leads to a lot of problems that can be life threatening such as high blood pressure and even heart trouble. So why not nip the problem in the bud with acupuncture.
