Kayaking Paddles
Date Added: May 15, 2008 03:19:42 AM

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Up a creek without a paddle”? (Well, some people talk about being in a smellier situation.) Anyway, it’s used to describe being in a very bad situation. There’s a reason this is such a good saying. Without a paddle, your nice shiny boat is just a nice shiny seat in the water.

Paddles are designed to convert the energy of your arm movements into propulsion for you kayak. However, not all paddles are created equally. This guide is very basic. To pick out the best paddle for your needs, visit a professional at an outfitter.Paddle

Basically, paddles can be broken down into two types: those used for touring (sea kayaking) and those used by whitewater paddlers.

Touring paddles are generally longer and lighter, designed for faster propulsion, and prolonged use. Typically, the blades are narrower as well. Whitewater paddles are usually shorter and heavier, designed for making quick turns and maneuvers. Usually, they are sturdier with reinforced tips to withstand repeated contact with rocks.

The types of material used in paddle construction are even more varied than their uses. Aluminum paddles with plastic blades are in wide use, they’re less expensive than other material and they can take a beating. They are also heavier, which can really wear you down after a long day of paddling.

Composite materials, like graphite and carbon are lighter, but much more expensive. Without some kind of reinforcement, which adds weight, they are also much more fragile. It’s painful to watch a paddler cry when the paddle they paid several hundred dollars for snaps into 2 pieces. Especially if they are now left up a creek without one. A spare 2-piece paddle is not a bad accessory to own.

Wooden paddles are lighter than you might expect. Most look quite beautiful (as do wooden kayaks, themselves). Some paddlers prefer wooden paddles for their ability to hold the heat from your hands, which can be a very good thing if you’re paddling in cold weather. Unfortunately, they can be quite expensive and require more maintenance than most other paddles.

By far, the most popular paddles are made from fiberglass. They offer a balance between price and weight, while requiring less maintenance than other models.
