Statistics show that 85% of Americans practice a religion that is based in Christianity. This leaves only a mere 15% who do not. These numbers seem backwards when you take into account that during the last two decades we have allowed prayer to be taken out of schools and the Ten Commandments to be taken off the wall of every courtroom. These are things that Christians hold dear.
Is it just coincidental that during that same two decades we have seen the most horrendous upswing in school violence this country has ever seen? Or that the number of violent crimes committed by “youthful” offenders has risen.
So, how did this happen?
Like so many other things the answer is simple. It is apathy and a concern for not being considered small minded.
In doing nothing we have allowed a small minority of people who are willing to voice their opinions and stand up for their beliefs to change this country.
We, as Christians, need to do the same. We need to remind people that it is alright to be Christian and have an opinion. It is time that we stopped being worried what people will think of us and start worrying about what our apathy is doing to our children.
We have been acting ashamed of being Christians and having our beliefs. This country was built on religious freedoms and slowly but surely they have managed to take them away from us. This is nothing short of religious censorship.
It isn’t as though Christians are intolerant of other religions. We have no problem with anyone having their own beliefs. We have a problem when people of with other beliefs decide that theirs are right and ours are wrong and force theirs down our throats.
It isn’t necessary to demand that everyone believe the same way to accomplish what we want. There is neutral ground for us to go to if the minority will meet us even part way.
Prayer in school does not have to be mandatory. When a prayer is being said at school and a child is not of a Christian religion, it doesn’t have to be required that they participate or even be present.
The changes we have allowed to happen are NOT working. Everyday we have to send our children to schools that are more like war zones than institutions of learning. This atmosphere of fear is causing them to not be able to learn the things they need to. It is impossible to learn and ask questions if you are worried about who has a gun and might not like what you have to say.
Christians need to once again ban together and let their opinions be heard. Let the minority know that we gave them a chance to do things their way and the results have been terrible.
