Making the Home Schooling Choice
Date Added: February 02, 2009 08:05:57 PM

Some parents decide to homeschool because the education system in their area is in bad shape and they don’t feel that their children can be taught properly there. While others make the choice because of the lifestyle that they and their children live. If your child is a performer it is almost required that they be homeschooled since they will have to be either on the set or auditioning in different places and traditional schooling does not give any preference to these types of children. So homeschooling is your only option.

When trying to make this choice it is essential that both parents agree on the course of action. If one is dead set against it and can not be swayed, it will be almost impossible to accomplish. With no support for your partner, it will be an even more overwhelming task.

Before you can make this decision, you need to do a lot of research first. There are many organizations that can be of assistance to you. Each state has its own set of requirements that you have to meet to begin homeschooling. Since there are over 4 million homeschooled children in this country, there is most definitely a group in your area that can help you decipher all of the information so that you can make an informed decision as to what is best for your child.

When you finally decide to homeschool your children you are dividing yourself into two separate people. Their teacher and their parent. You can not parent while you are teaching. You have got to be able to maintain discipline and a working atmosphere in your “classroom”. While you are trying to teach them geometry is not the time to coddle them and give in to the crying or whining. Both you and they need to be able to make the distinction between you as a teacher and you as their parent. This is probably the most difficult part of the job because it is very easy to slip into the parent mode when your child is having trouble with something. Your instinct is to be nurturing and loving because that is your child.

Unfortunately that isn’t always what they need. Sometimes they need a stronger hand from their teacher to make sure that they understand the material that they are working on. You may need to just step back and reassure them that you are confident that if they truly think about the problem they can come up with the solution on their own.

If you can find a way to accomplish all of these things then you should succeed in giving your child an excellent homeschooling experience.
