Purchasing A Freezer For Home Use
Date Added: December 04, 2007 04:28:04 AM

When it comes to freezers there are two basic types: Chest freezers and upright freezers. Before you make a decision on which, you will need to have some idea as to how much food you will be storing there.
Either type of standard freezer usually holds about 35 pounds of frozen food per cubic foot of freezer space. Freezers usually range in size from 5.5 cubic feet to 25 cubic feet. Buying ont that is too large and you will never fill would be a waste of space and money. Freezers run more efficiently when they are fuller.
How much space you have to place the freezer in will be the next consideration for which type to purchase. A chest style freezer requires more floor space than does an upright, but chest freezers can run more efficiently. This is because they have better insulating properties and lose less cold air when opened up. If you have many large bulky items to freeze a chest freezer would work better.
The common color for a chest freezer is white and has bins for storage instead of shelves. These freezers are typically stored in garages or basements. Because chest freezers offer a wetter storage space for food they are less likely to cause freezer burn. However chest freezers must be manually defrosted and child safety locks are especially important.
The upright models will have the look of a side by side refrigerator with storage shelves inside. Uprights will take up much less floor space and make for easier food organizing. You can also choose between manual or automatic defrost on the uprights.
Whichever model you go with a freezer alarm is always a good investment. It will warn you if the temperature in your freezer drops and puts the food stored there in danger.
