You have it all planned out. You have your passport, sunscreen and camera packed and you are on your way to the airport. Are you missing anything? Is there anything you may have forgotten?
Maybe you have not taken into account that most travel destinations also have people waiting there to take advantage of the unwary and rip them off giving paradise locations hidden dangers. So ask yourself where is the harm in arriving at your destination prepared for those dangers with precautions in place to reduce the chances of your dream vacation being marred with unfortunate incidents to your belongings?
The tourism bureaus at most travel destinations don’t want to frighten off travelers with warnings about theft so it can be hard to obtain information specific to your destinations. That is where your common sense needs to come into play.
Think about how you look to would be thieves. If you have the look of a tourist any thief will mark you as someone who may be carrying more cash than normal in addition to being in unfamiliar surroundings. These are signs that thieves use to mark their victims. It is not only the camera that marks you as a tourist it can also be your clothing. Consider what the locals are wearing wherever you travel and dress to blend in. Usually it only takes a few modifications to your wardrobe to get the right effect. It could significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim or theft while you travel.
Just like the city you live in every travel destination also has the “bad parts” to be avoided. All it takes some research prior to leaving to identify them. If you are one of those travelers that wants to experience both the good and the bad of your destination, make sure that you take appropriate safety measures. Ask someone familiar with the area what precautions you should take or consider using a guided tour for those areas in order to experience them under safer conditions.
Pay close attention to what you have with you. Keep bags close to your body and secured. Pouches and bags that are secured across your body are much safer than those that simply hang from the shoulder. Keep your belongings close to you and do not leave valuables such as cameras exposed or unattended. Even a camera sitting on a table right next to you is easy pickings for a clever thief that distracts you.
With these things in mind, here are some additional tips you should use to avoid becoming a victim while traveling.
· Conceal any valuables as best you can and make sure not to carry them in such a way to make them easy for thieves to snatch from you.
· Do not carry excessive amounts of cash. Limit what you have on you to only what you will need.
· Carry yourself with confidence as thieves will be less likely to pick anyone who looks in control and sure of their surroundings.
· If you feel the need to check a map for your location only do this out of sight.
· Be cautious when removing cash from your wallet or purse, especially in locations such as tourist attractions or public transportation areas. This gives a potential thief the chance to mark the location of your cash and locating it is the first step to stealing it.
· Treat groups of people with suspicion as thieves sometimes work in groups. Some will work to keep you distracted while others attempt to steal any valuables.
· If you use a back pack to carry your belongings make sure there are no valuables in the outer pockets where a thief can get easy access to them.
· Make sure that you keep your guard up in places where you tend to relax such as bars or restaurants. Keep your bags and belongings close and wrap the straps of things like purses securely so you will be alerted it any attempt is made at removing them.
The thing you want to be sure of is returning home with memories of a wonderful vacation experience rather than one of loss and frustration.
