Oil Painting

Oil painting is a process of painting with pigments that are bound in oil which dries quickly. In the earlier days the artists use linseed oil for oil painting. This linseed is boiled with the pine resin and used as varnish for the glow of painting. Oil painting is the method of using different colors separated in oil. Some of the oils such as safflower oil, poppy seed oil, walnut seed oil are included rarely for oil painting and these oils will give various properties to the oil painting and also give differentiation of visible colors. Painters will use different kinds of oil to give their desired effect on paintings and they develop a particular feel on their paintings with the help of these paints. Oil paintings can take longer to dry. It is a very popular art work and many artists consider oil painting as one of the fundamentals of media art.

Special Features of Oil Painting

Domestic paint is the most common type of modern application of oil painting and it uses luminous colors to give a desired look which can be used both in interior and exterior. Sketching figures with charcoal was the first pigment used by the traditional artists. An oil painting permits both the mixture of colors and brittle effects and is not hidden for textural variation. Oil paints can be used in canvas materials and it is applied with the help of smooth brush or a thin palette of knife. The basic rules for an oil painting are that the second layer of oil paint should be oilier when compared to the first layer. Oil paint dries by oxidation and not by evaporation. The art Conservators believe that an oil painting takes about 60 to 80 years for complete drying.  This type of painting remains wet for a longer time and it helps the artists to change the color, texture or to change the form of figure. Many oil paintings expose the evidence of this upon close examination. If the painting remains wet for long time and if the painter wants to create a new painting then he removes the entire figure and forms a new painting.

Process of Painting

The canvas which is used for traditional painting is made of linen and it is less expensive and these canvases are coated with the glue made of animal tissue and prepared with white lead paint or chalk powder before painting. The process of painting differs from one artist to another but often the certain steps are same for all artists. The first step for oil painting is to choose the best surface for painting. Most of the artists choose canvas as their surface and the other surfaces are cardboard, paper slate, pressed wood, wooden panel and linoleum. The pigments used for oil painting may have any number of natural substances for color such as cobalt for blue color, sulfur for yellow color etc.
