Surviving the Theme Parks Part 2

Left Is Right
After entering the park, forgo the urge to head to the right. Most people will subconsciously choose that direction, so take a left and leave the crowds behind.

Four-Star Disability Servicedisney
Most of the parks have recently begun a strong push to increase their awareness of, and accessibility for, those with disabilities. Their wheelchair rentals are more than decent; likewise, guests are able to pick up special passes allowing for faster and more comfortable access to the attractions. They can be picked up at various park locations, usually found near the main entrance. (Disneyland and WDW’s Magic Kingdom make them available at Town Hall.) Disney actually allows groups of eight ride access with their special-needs guest.

Leave The Souvenirs Behind
Instead of walking around with an armload of bags, try using the park’s little-used package holding service. You can buy your collectibles as you browse the shops, and leave them with the clerks. At the end of the day, just pick up your newfound valuables on your way out!

Make Like An Animal
If you plan to visit Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, a good suggestion is to mimic the wildlife. Arrive a little before the park opens, when most of the animals are feeding. It’s cooler, and they'll probably run for cover once the hot sun comes out. Never fear, though: once dusk arrives, they’ll be back out to play.

Know The Park
Before visiting any theme park, it’s a good idea to check current operating hours. It’s also wise to find out what days may be more crowded than others. Generally the busiest days at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Animal Kingdom will be Monday through Wednesday. MGM Studios usually finds its crowds arriving on Thursday and Friday. Also as a general rule, the slowest day for all the major parks will be Sundays. Once evening falls on any night of the week, the crowds will usually begin to thin out. You may want to consider arriving early, going back to the hotel for a well-deserved nap during the afternoon (also avoiding the hostile heat), and then returning in the evening.

Come In With The Cast
Another little-known secret: visitors to Disney parks are able to enter through the same gates as the Cast Members who work there! Your passport will be accepted, and you’ll never encounter the long lines.

Meet The Cast
From personal experience, I highly recommend Disney’s Character Breakfasts. They’re hosted at various locations in the Walt Disney World Resort, and at Goofy’s Kitchen in the Disneyland Hotel. The prices aren’t bad, and the food is diverse and terrific. The best part is that various costumed characters periodically visit your table -- it’s a great opportunity to take your child’s picture without having to battle crowds inside the parks. Bring plenty of film!
