Every golf club in a golf bag is different with individual yet similar uses. When learning how to golf it is essential to gain an understanding of each clubs use. If one were to try getting around a golf course with just a putter it might take some extra effort and a whole lot more time.
Using The Driver For Fairways
You should know that there are clubs called drivers. Another name for them is woods and there is a two wood, three wood, four wood and five wood up to seven wood. Those last couple woods, the six and seven are not used all that often and not usually in a set. The difference in the clubs is the angle on the face of the head. The lower numbered clubs have the flattest striking surface and the higher numbers are more angled to provide more loft.
Golfers will use woods when they want to hit the ball for longer distances. The head of a wood is heavier and has more bulk. When you swing it you get more force and momentum into the swing which provides a more powerful strike on the ball. That propels it farther down the fairway.
When you want to power the golf ball over 200 yards down the fairway your best club choice could well be a wood. There is something that is a bit ironic about woods of today, they are actually made of metal.
Get More Control With The Distance
Another kind of club that you should know about is called an iron. Irons are used when a golfer wants to get more accuracy on a shot than can be obtained with a wood. Irons are typically used on shots that are shorter in distance, but not always.
Irons can be used on tougher shots that still require distance. Another possibility would be in windy or other weather related conditions that make the shot a bit tougher.
Just like woods, there are several choices of irons that range from a one to a nine iron with an increasing angle for increased loft. This also means that you will get less distance with an iron than is possible with a wood. The accuracy and loft provided by the iron is essential when you are trying to place the ball close to the pin.
Specialized Golf Clubs
Every golf bag should include a few clubs that are more specialized for situations.
The first one you should know about is the putter. The putter is designed to provide the most accuracy of all the clubs and is used when you are actually trying to get the ball in the hole. Typically used on the green for shorter distance shots.
The wedge is used to gain the highest loft possible on the ball and is used to get over obstacles such as trees. It will allow you to clean an obstacle and drop the ball on the green with very little forward momentum. The ball can drop in place like a stone.
If you have ever seen a golf course you know about sand traps. The next type of club called a sand wedge will help you to escape the sand trap. The angle of this club will allow you to slice through the sand under the ball to lift it up and out onto the grass.
Now the pitching wedge is the second most accurate of the clubs. You typically use this club to place an accurate shot to the green and land it close to the hole.
So Which Clubs Should You Buy?
Now you should have an understanding of the different types of clubs in the bag and how they are used. What you need to know is there is still more to it. There are dozens of different types and brands of clubs to choose from.
You can buy customized clubs or over the counter. There are choices between used clubs and new clubs. The truth is that there are many types of clubs and each manufacturer will tell you that their brand is the one that will make you a pro. Clubs may make a slight difference, but what really determines how well you play is your skill.
The most important thing is to get your clubs and play to have fun and gain skill.
