The Seven Habits of Highly Secure Drivers
Date Added: May 11, 2008 03:20:39 AM

In a large percentage of cases, these incidents could have been avoided by some simple, common-sense habits, that can be learned by each member of your family.

Consider these seven steps:

1. Learn the habit of checking the interior of your car before you get in. It only takes a moment, but it is an important safety step. The best thing about this step is that it doesn't take any time at all, it just takes a habit change. As you approach your car and unlock it or open it. Just glance into the back seat, including the floor. This is even more important for those times when you try to unlock your car with a remote, and find that you locked it instead, meaning of course, that you forgot to lock it when you left.

2. When possible, park in attended lots. It's worth the money. If there is a valet, give him only the ignition key, or the new 'valet keys' most new cars are coming out with. Put any valuables you don't plan on taking in the trunk before turning the car over to the valet. Of course, if the lot is unattended, always lock your car.

3. Keep your car in reliable working order. Never let your gas tank go below 1/4 full, and make certain your tires are in good condition. You don't want to find yourself cranking an unresponsive engine or changing a worn tire late at night in a dark garage.

4. Your horn is an effective personal alarm if you're in trouble. Sound it loud and long.

5. Under no circumstances should you ever pick up a hitchhiker. This includes children and old ladies. It is a common ruse. If you decide to help a disabled motorist, make certain it is in a populated area. It's unfortunate, but if they are broken down in an isolated area, you must consider the situation suspect.

6. If you think someone is following you, calmly drive on to the nearest police or fire station, or failing that, to an open and preferably-busy service station. Perpetrators hate an audience, so use that to your advantage.

7. If you have a flat tire or an overheated engine in an area you think may be unsafe, consider trying to drive on until you reach a safer location. Your safety is more important than your vehicle.

None of these rules requires any additional time, or buying additional products. They are easy to do, and will enhance your highway security considerably if you can get in the habit of doing them. Teach them to your spouse and children.
