Water 4 Gas Is It A Scam
Date Added: August 03, 2008 02:57:54 AM

gas pumpFor many years, vehicles could only run using gasoline. The idea of a vehicle running on water seemed to be a stuff made only for sci-fi flicks. However, what most people do not realize is that the technology that allows vehicles to run on water has been developed many years ago.

There are, however, some problems that prevent the full scale implementation of this technology, particularly in terms of laying the necessary infrastructure. With the continued increase in fuel prices, the need for this technology to be adapted and implemented has never been more urgent.

Many automobile companies have begun to manufacture hydrogen vehicles. These are vehicles that tap hydrogen as its source for motive power. These vehicles convert hydrogen’s chemical energy into mechanical energy either through combustion or through electrochemical conversion. Using combustion method, hydrogen is burned in vehicle engines by applying the same approach as that of a traditional gasoline vehicle. Using electrochemical conversion, on the other hand, the hydrogen reacts with oxygen in producing electricity which is used in powering the traction motor of the vehicle. Hydrogen likewise is produced through electrolysis, in which the elements of hydrogen and oxygen found in water are separated by electric current. This process is made through the use of a fuel cell.

But unlike fossil fuels, water is not an energy source but more of a carrier of energy. Thus, the vehicle’s energy is provided either by a traditional power pant or a hydrogen station.

There are a lot of benefits that hydrogen cars can provide. For vehicle owners, it specifically addresses the problem of rising fuel costs. Since water is an abundant source compared to fossil fuels, vehicle owners no longer have to be burdened by exorbitant costs of fuel. Another benefit of the use of hydrogen cars is that it reduces emissions that result to the degradation of the quality of air.

However, while the use of water-powered vehicles is attractive and promising enough, this technology has yet to be fully adapted due to various reasons. For one, the cost of building the necessary infrastructure entails billions of dollars. The gasoline fueling system that most countries use should be replaced in order to implement the hydrogen technology.

It is estimated that the replacement of gasoline fueling infrastructure in the US would hit around a trillion US dollars. It would take years before the entire fuel infrastructure system is replaced by hydrogen refilling system.

Also, it is very costly to produce hydrogen fuel cells, apart from these devices being too fragile. Researches are being conducted to produce affordable fuel cells that are also strong enough to withstand the bumps and the vibrations that are often experienced during road trips.

Other areas which have to be developed in order to make hydrogen more ideal in powering vehicles are the service life of fuel cells and the cost involved in the production of hydrogen.

Indeed, water for gas is not a scam. This technology, while still undeveloped for mass implementation, is seen as the key to a future free from exorbitant oil prices and unhealthy emissions.
