Addiction to Facebook

facebookWithin the period of time of about six years the number of Facebook members has grown to more than 350 million people. On a daily basis more than half of these members log onto their page and post new information updates or add pictures to their album. On a weekly basis more than 3.5 billion items are added to members’ profiles such as pictures, videos, messages, and anything else they may think of to share. Facebook is undeniably one of the largest occurrences within the internet world. On average users spend one hour on the website every day, remember that this is just on average so really a majority of them spend a longer amount of time maneuvering through this site daily.

Every individual likes to feel as if there are liked and belong, they want to feel like someone cares about them and their lives. In a way Facebook provides this feeling for many of its users. An individual’s Facebook profile is a way for them to let everyone know every little detail about their lives that they want to share. The information that a user post about theirselves is not necessarily directed at one person in particular, it is for anyone and everyone that is interested. The website is all about sharing information about yourself and whatever else you may want to share because this is the way that the site functions no one is considered conceded because they are talking all about themselves. Every direct message, poke, or comment that users receive from other users is only reinforcing their feelings of being important and interesting. Both of these feelings are nice to obtain and can become addictive especially if the feelings or only a click away.

Another reason why Facebook is so addictive besides providing users with feelings of importance is that it is a way to be nosey and not receive any backlash for doing so. Facebook allows its users to learn about everything that is going on with their friends and other individuals that they are just curious about. While on the site users get a personal tour of people’s lives and special moments they have had through words, pictures, and video. The best part about Facebook that makes it so addictive is that users can eavesdrop on other users’ conversations. There is almost always a juicy argument to run across or some other gossip and drama. Facebook is just like a great talk show like Maury or Jerry Springer it is just all in a written format and we all know how addictive talk shows are. Anyone who is new to Facebook just be knowledgeable of the fact that you will probably become addicted to this site and everything that it offers, so be prepared to spend many hours glancing into other people’s lives.
