When it comes to combating the daily roadblocks that a freelance writer comes up against, for the most part a writer can always fall back on their creativity to get them out of a tough spot. In fact, alongside technical know-how, creativity is the number one weapon in the arsenal of a freelance writer. Writers of every skill level, both professional and amateur, have at one time or another had experience with what is commonly known as writer’s block. At times like this, no matter how developed their creativity is, frustration quickly sets in on the writer as it becomes painfully obvious that try as they might they cannot overcome this sudden and sometimes prolonged lack of inspiration. Many experienced writers have tricks, tips, and tools that they use to try and get through these rough times.
One nice way to combat the evils of writer’s block is to consistently maintain what is known as an idea file. An idea file is simply a list, whether on paper or in a text file for use on a computer, where a writer logs various ideas for writing projects for use at a later time. The thought process here is that when the inevitable occasion occurs when writer’s block is a problem, the writer then will not have to rely on their creativity to come up with their next writing project as all they have to do is check their list and pick a project to undertake. This is an extremely valuable tool as it largely takes the thought process out of the job of determining what to write about and leaves the writer free to expend all their mental energy just on the job of doing the actual writing.
The number one priority for a writer contemplating using an idea file to focus on is the upkeep of the file itself. While this may seem like an obvious point since it is near impossible to use an idea file that is not being maintained regularly, this is sometimes easier said than done. Often during times in the life of the writer when writer’s block is not an issue, it is difficult to remember to plan for the unknown that may be somewhere off in the future. That is exactly what writer’s block is though, something that cannot be predicted as far as when it will strike. A writer using an idea file must have it ready and available for use at the moment it is needed.
Coming up with subjects to write about is usually not a problem for a skilled writer. Often what needs to be dealt with are things like technique, research, and communication with the buyer of the project. No matter what the skill level of the writer though, they are susceptible to something like writer’s block just like every other writer in the world. Using something as simple as an idea file may just be what makes the difference between a writer struggling during the writing process and a writer who succeeds in almost always coming up with new and marketable content.

I make notes all of the time and frequently go back to them when I need some inspiration, so your advice is on the mark.
I also find inspiration when visiting other blogs and reading what people post. Usually, I can glean a fresh idea for an article I want to write and then I’m no longer inflicted with writer’s block.
