BlackBerry Storm

BlackBerry StormYou may have read my post on the BlackBerry Bold (located here).  If you have, you know I recently went through the process of learning more about some new cell phones in order to make a purchase.  I looked at the features of several cell phones before finally settling on one which one worked for me.  Now since I conducted all that research I figured I may as well write about it, so here is what I found on the BlackBerry Storm.

If you have ever wanted a BlackBerry Storm you should take a look at its features. Here in this article we will be taking a brief review of this affront to the Apple iPhone. Let’s see how the BlackBerry Storm does in its basic form.

The first thing about the blackberry storm is of course the screen. The “Surepress” screen is designed as a button, yes the whole screen. If you have never used it, you really should try it. The screen on the BlackBerry Storm is a tactile button and you can feel it click. No, it will not get pushed by accident. Research in Motion has done a good job in designing it to not be too hard to engage a button and yet not too easy so you will not push buttons by accident. Some people do not like the space between the edge of the screen and the rest of the blackberry storm. It is possible that dirt could gather in that space, but at the same time it is big enough to be cleaned by using a pen or other device. As for brightness, it is a winner. A video looks really good with the 480 X 360 resolution of the BlackBerry Storm. A major problem that people have with the blackberry storm screen is that it will not scroll as well as they would like it to.

Using the screen of the BlackBerry Storm to do messaging may turn out to be chore. Continually pressing the Surepress screen to input letters becomes unhandy for some. The good news is that the icons are not just for small fingers and are considered large. The accelerometer will keep up with you better than the iPhone’s will. You can change between landscape or portrait and keep clicking. The only way to see the full QWERTY keyboard is to turn the blackberry storm to the landscape mode. If you are typing in a message on a BlackBerry Storm, you can also send in a picture. The BlackBerry Storm has MMS. This allows the storm to send pictures like you would a text message.

Battery life on the BlackBerry Storm is average. The battery is bigger in the blackberry bold which is a 1500 mAh (milliamp hour ). The blackberry storm’s has a 1400 mAh. If you use it heavy, you will be needing a recharge. The storm has no Wi-Fi. The camera is not anything special, with its 3.2 megapixel capacity, but you do get some photo editing software. As with other phones, it is equipped with GPS. It has ringtones and notifications. The storm has a media player for the video in mp4 H.263, mp4 part 2 simple profile, H.264, and WMV. The BlackBerry Storm also has bluetooth.

The strong points of the blackberry storm like many products from RIM is its durability and its superior email abilities. The screen is also considered a strong point. Overall, you will probably like the blackberry storm if you have liked the past products from Research In Motion. Verizon is the company that will handle your calls and has just recently become the largest mobile provider in the United States. Some people have the opinion that the BlackBerry Storm is just a cross between a blackberry and an iPhone. Take a BlackBerry Storm out for a spin and see what you think.

Good review, recently I have been reading everything there is to find on the Storm, G1 and iPhone to see which is best to suit our needs.

I have to admit that I am lagging behind when it comes to technology!

I don’t have a Blackberry, IPOD, or anything like that! Just a Tracphone.

I do appreciate your write up as it will guide me to what to look for if I ever decide to become more technically savvy!

I’m still using my HTC P3600i (a PocketPC Phone). Don’t think I’d be replacing it with a BlackBerry though

It has all the BlackBerry features and doesn’t look/feel so bulky :D

I’ve also been doing a lot of research for an upcoming phone purchase when my AT&T contract expires in June. I have a Curve now and I really like it so I may stick with a Blackberry. Are there any areas in which the iphone just blows the Storm away? Or is is mostly a personal preference thing?

Thank Nathan, I found the Storm had better extended office capabilities and features than the iPhone. For what I needed, BlackBerry was the clear choice over iPhone.
