With the increase in people turning to the internet and blogging to earn money, there are a number of issues that surround this activity. The question that blogging can make money is undoubted, though the amount of money can vary and in most cases will not be as much as a full time job. One of the questions that seems to be popping up recently is whether blogging can be considered a business in its own right. There are many business using blogging to promote their product or service, but when does the blog itself become the business?
There is a certain opinion that blogging is not a business in itself, but a means to a further end. For example, many businesses will use a blog as part of their business plan to increase their customer base and sales, but the blog itself is not the business. In this case the blog is the tool by which the business gains more custom, as a form of marketing. It can prove as a successful method to bring in new clients and create more sales. However, what about pro-bloggers who use their blogs as their only source of income? These bloggers did not always have a business before their blog, and all of their income is from their blog, or range of blogs.
There is increasing opinion towards the idea that a blog can be considered a business, for many different reasons. Firstly, running a blog requires its own interaction and management of customers. To run a successful blog and gain money from it, a key element will be to interact with your customers. In a blog, this will be done through comments and informative content that is frequently updated. To provide content relevant to the customer, the blog author will need to keep an eye on what their customers are looking for - just in any other business.
As with any other business, blogging also relies on a specific gap in the market, or a way of outdoing competitors to gain business in the field. With blogging, what the business is effectively selling is content - content attracts users and increases the potential to make money through advertising within the blog, or other money-making methods. In this way it is as vital with blogging as any other business to keep track of and keep up with trends to increase the readership of the blog.
It is certainly possible to consider blogging a business. The daily activities of pro-bloggers who make a living from blogging revolve around keeping track of customers, making sure that they are happy, and keeping an eye on the competition. The main difference lies in the fact that the blog’s customers may contribute indirectly to the amount of money the blog earns. For example, an increased readership won’t bring money in itself, but will attract higher advertising revenue from your site. Many businesses run in such a way, and there is no reason why blogging is any less of a business.
