Tools For Web Development

Posted on June 4, 2009 by Bruce

If you hand code your Web sites, you don’t really have a lot of tools available to help debug your code or find problems with your CSS. Even if you use a GUI editor, you can’t really test a site until you upload it to the Web and test it in your browser. Then, when you need to make changes, you’ll have to flit backwards and forwards between your browser and your editor to make the changes, upload them, and then test them. Well, help is at hand in the form of Firebug, which is a tool that can help you develop a site by providing an interface for working directly with the code.

Downloading Firebugweb-development

Firebug is a Firefox extension that adds Web development functionality into the browser. If you haven’t used extensions before, an extension is a small program that you download and install into your browser. Firebug works with Firefox, so you need to install and launch Firefox first. When you’ve done this, visit www.getfirebug.com and install the extension.

Firebug works with any Web site, so you can use it to work on a Web site you are developing and you can also use it to poke around other people’s Web sites. Once Firebug is installed, whenever you load a Web page, you will see a small indicator in the bottom right corner of the Firefox window. A green tick indicates that the page has loaded correctly and a red cross indicates that there were problems with the page. Click on this indicator to open the Firebug panel. Full Story »

Easy Ways To Promote Your Blog

Posted on May 21, 2009 by Bruce

Blog PromotionBuilding a blog is fairly easy. Maintaining your blog is not necessarily hard either. Many people though are confused and frustrated when it comes to promoting their blog. Blog promotion is relatively easy, if you know what you’re doing. Blog promotion methods range from steps you can take on your own blog, to websites and other blogs that you can participate in that will hopefully direct traffic back to your blog. You can even passively promote your blog in ways that are both easy and not time consuming. Whatever methods you choose, know that blog promotion is one of the key factors in whether your blog becomes a success or not.

Here are some easy ways to promote your blog.

Submission
While it is not really that important any longer to submit your blog to search engines, most of them will be able to find it on their own once you start building links, there are still a number of worthwhile places to submit your blog. There are a number of blog directories on the internet and these are great places to make sure that your blog is listed at. Some blog directories are broad in nature and house information on all kinds of blogs, other blog directories are more niche related and if you find one that catalogs blogs in the same subject as you then it is very important to be listed there. General directories are good places to be listed, so submission there is valuable as well. Full Story »

It takes quality content and a decent marketing effort for a blog to become extremely popular, but for those that come and visit a blog to return and participate in the discussion that goes on there, they need to feel that they are valued by the blog owner. A blog owner who knows the value of reliable readers who participate through commenting, knows that these repeat readers have the power to make or break their blog. One of the best ways to keep them coming back again and again is to make them feel valued and appreciated.

Here are five ways to make your blog readers feel valued.

1. Invite Readers to Comment

It seems like a no-brainer, but many bloggers continue to not allow those who read their blogs to then comment on the posts. While it can be time consuming to approve comments and respond to those that need or deserve responses, doing so encourages readers to come back again and again. One of the aspects of blogging that appeals to readers is that they are somewhat interactive, keeping them as interactive as possible is a great way to both attract and retain readers. Full Story »
