Creating better directories through volunteerism

directory-volunteerismThe directory section of forums are filled (my email box also for that matter) with different forms of the same question over and over again. Newbie’s to the directory industry ask for advice in how to start a directory.

The unfortunate reality is that most of those seeking this advice are not thinking in terms of starting a quality directory. In most cases they think in terms of popping up one or several dozen directories on an inexpensive .info domain in hopes of earning millions by being the next Yahoo directory. Reality is far from that painted picture.

Reality tells us that running a single directory of any quality takes dedication and hard work. Trying to pop them up by the dozen and retain quality is an impossible task without a very large administrative staff. Anyone who thinks running a directory is easy, may be delusional. It is hard work which takes dedication and persistence. If you’re not ready to make that commitment, owning your own directory is not a good idea.

There is much more to starting a quality directory than getting advice on what script or finding instructions on how to install it. Those are only schematics and can be easily found in forums or at various script companies.

But schematics are not the advice those thinking of starting a directory should be asking about nor do they need. The advice they need is geared to preparing themselves to manage and edit a quality directory.

The title comes into play for those seeking to start a directory for the right reasons. Unless you are already a directory owner or have had experience working in a directory, there is no way to really grasp what it takes to manage a directory of quality. Jumping into the deep end of the pool and not knowing how to swim is never a good plan in life or business.

So I posed this question at the V7N forum. I know V7N forum has members who are knowledgeable directory owners and skilled at managing quality directories. The discussion generated some very good feedback which should be read by current and potential future directory owners.

Experienced directory owners agree that a great first step for anyone considering building a directory would be to first train yourself and learn about the industry through volunteerism. Get a grasp of what exactly it means to be an editor by actually editing for a directory.

There are many directories which accept volunteer editors. Apply at one or several to get a good understanding of what is involved should you actually start your own. Sites like JoeAnt, Skaffe, Botw (blogs) and dmoz take applications for volunteer editing positions. Any of which can help prepare potential new directory owners for the path ahead of them.

If you’re thinking about building a directory do not neglect to first build your foundation for success in the industry.
