Facebook Basics: Getting Started With Facebook

facebook_logoIf you have been lost at sea for about three years then you probably haven’t heard of the social networking phenomenon Facebook. Or maybe you have. In any account, Facebook has proved to be the king of the social networking sites by toppling MySpace in new sign ups and regular users. In fact, recent surveys suggest that Facebook has integrated itself into the daily routines of it’s users.

By recent counts over 200 million people are regularly active on Facebook. That’s a lot of people updating their statuses, sending pokes, buying and selling friends, writing on walls, commenting on pictures, and the thousands of other things you can do with Facebook. Again, in recent surveys people said the reasons they were active on Facebook included:

  • Connecting with family
  • Getting in touch with friends and old classmates
  • Meeting new people in their area
  • Networking with others in their business or hobby

Facebook Is Social

People, ever since the beginning of time, have always been a social animal. We are not designed to be alone and will consciously, or unconsciously, seek out others to have a relationship with. Facebook enables people to do that in a way that helps anyone whether they are an extrovert or an introvert.

However, the problem is that, even though Facebook is great for anyone to start an account and create their profile, many people are intimidated in getting started with Facebook. Here’s a quick, easy guide to do that.

1. Create Your Facebook Account

This is pretty straightforward. When you first go to the Facebook.com website you will see a form on their homepage where you can fill in your full name, email address, password, gender, and date of birth. Once you’ve done that… you are on your way.

2. More Specific Info

Once your account is created, you’ll then be asked for some more specific information pertaining to your home, work, and recreational activities. It is important to keep in mind that if you are looking to remain anonymous on the web and just “lurk”, Facebook is not for you. Facebook is for interaction, networking, and relationship building. Answering these questions fully, and honestly, is the best way to enjoy your Facebook experience.

3. Profile Picture

Your profile picture is the first impression. Most Facebook users recommend using a current picture of yourself, but some people choose to use characters to represent them or other type avatars which fit their personalities.

4. Join Network

Every Facebook user joins a local network. This is just another word for area that you live in. This is mostly a large city near you, school, or organization.

5. Find Friends

The easiest, quickest way to find your first friends is to do a search of your network. After that you can look at friends from your high school, graduating class, hobbies, or hometown. Searching for friends, and meeting new people, is what Facebook is all about.

6. Have Fun

Facebook isn’t suppose to be a chore to use. It is about fun and friendships. There are countless numbers of application you can load your profile up with for further interaction. You can use Facebook as a place to host our pictures so others can see them, upload videos to, play games, take quizzes, join groups, and a wide variety of other great fun-filled activities.
