Once your blog has been up and running for a few months, you will undoubtedly encounter the problem of lower traffic than you wanted. Every blogger wants their blog to be popular and visited by a large number of people. The most popular blogs on the internet were either the first or one of the earliest to cover the subject they do, or they stand out from the crowd because of either exceptional content or uniqueness. How can you make your blog stand out though? How can your blog outshine others coveing the same topics that you do.
Here are five ways you can make your blog shine more than others.
1. Speak from a Different Perspective
It can be difficult to select a topic that is not already covered by tons of people online. One thing you can do to set your blog apart from others covering similar subjects is by speaking from a different perspective. Try a humorous route, focus on the funny aspects of your topic. Go for an angle where you tie in how your subject fits in and interacts with current events of the day. You could even choose to write using the voice of a character that you make up. Choosing to write your blog using a unique voice may be the perfect way to set it apart from the crowd.
2. Be a Workhorse
There are a number of blogs out there that are updated sporadically. Often people think they can start a blog and make it successful while only posting to it once or twice a week, or even less often. You have an opportunity to make your blog be seen as something different if you can be a workhorse and post to your blog each and every day. Being a prolific blog poster adds other value to your blog as well including the fact that there will be more content out there for search engines to come across.
3. Leverage Your Past Work
The biggest downfall that blogs have is that you can write your best post ever, and sooner or later it will disappear off the front page and many people will never get a chance to read and enjoy it. There are a number of ways you can leverage these past posts you have created and make them an important part of each day on your blog. There are a number of plugins and scripts that can help do this including posting links to similar posts at the bottom of each new post, having your most popular posts listed in your sidebar, manually linking to important posts you’ve written in the past, and more. Taking advantage of this way of pointing out older, but still relevant, content is a great way to make your blog stand out because many people’s blogs have the appearance of only featuring the content that was written most recently.
4. Understand and Use Images and Video Content
More than nine out of ten blogs online are largely just text. After awhile, most readers tire of reading text entry after text entry. If you can master and understand how to properly make use of images and video, either as accents to your text posts or as post unto themselves, then you will go a long way in making your blog something truly different than most of the other blogs on the internet.
5. Write An Ongoing Series
Most blog posts serve as stand-alone content that a casual visitor to a blog can read and take something away from. Most blog posts just give quick insight into a basic topic. If you would like your blog to stand out from the crowd, write an in-depth series on an important topic. This will attract new readers to your blog in two ways, you will get readers who want to learn more about that topic and learn the kinds of things that can only be revealed in well though out extended commentary, and you will also attract repeat readers as many preaders will come back tomorrow and the day after to hear more about the topic you are writing about. Writing an ongoing series can bring in many readers that otherwise would not visit you blog.
While you may have the best of intentions with your blog, and while it may exhibit stellar content and valuable information, if there isn’t something different about your blog than the others out there that have been covering the same topics for years, your blog will be overlooked. Making your blog shine more than others is a great way to grab more than your fair share of internet traffic. Using the above methods, combined with your consistent posting of quality content, the traffic coming to your blog should increase steadily over time.

Great tips. I am trying to be one of those work horses that you speak of. I try to have a new post every day of the week and take Sunday off. This tought because I have several blogs and also run several blog directories. I like your advice about an ongoing series. I will put som thought into that one and see what I can come up with.

I also agree with the workhorse comment. Fresh content is key to ranking and traffic. I have personally let a blog languish for a couple of months and watched the traffic drop by 50%. This is an important point that many site owners and bloggers forget.
