While blogging is one of the more popular online activities these days, there are a great many people that enter the field not ready for the time commitment that it requires. There are a number of steps in the initial process of blogging that are relatively simple. Coming up with the idea for a blog and choosing a blog theme or designing the overall look of it are things that can usually be accomplished on the first day. A blog is a website that is continually changing and it is that ongoing updating that requires the most time and effort from a blogger.
Even when a blogger can come up with timely and interesting topics to regularly post to their blog, there is still the question of how often should a blog be updated. The answer to this question can directly dictate how much time and effort updating their blog will require of them. The truth is though that there is no set in stone answer to this question. Different topics may require a different blogging schedule for that blog to be successful. While one blog may touch on daily issues that are best served to be commented on multiple times per week, another blog may cover a subject that can be adequately commented on weekly. There are even business blogs that people update multiple times per day.
Generally speaking, it is best to update your blog multiple times per week. This gives your readers the chance to get in the habit of checking your blog regularly for newly updated information. When you update your blog three to five times a week, people know that they can check your site out regularly for some of the best new commentary on the subject matter you are covering. If you were to only update your blog once a week, you then have to count on the memory power of your readers to remember to return the following week to again read your commentary.
While it is best to update your blog often, you should also not forget to update your blog regularly. If you do decide to commit to a three to five times a week blog updating schedule, one of the best things you can do is to make those updates occur on the same days each week. This takes the strategy of getting your readers to develop a habit of checking your blog regularly to the very next step. They now not only know that your blog will be regularly updated, but they know on which days to expect new content to read.
Blogging is a great way to establish an online presence. Through blogging people can both develop their own online money making venture as well as use their blog to promote their already developed website. The fact that a blog is a living website that grows and changes over time is what makes it one of the effective types of websites to own and maintain. The time committment it takes to successfully run a blog can seem overwhelming to some. But when combining regularly updated blog entries with a set schedule, you could develop your blog into the success that you want it to be.

This article makes me feel guilty for not being able to post as much as I would like. I do agree that the amount of time between posts will vary depending on the blog; but I think that people can’t neglect quality, which I try to post quality information every time I blog. In addition to posting more frequently, another thing that I know I need to work on is to create posts that solicit more feedback and comments.

I agree with a regular schedule for updating blogs. I also believe that quality trumps quantity.
Traditionally, to get your blog “indexed” you had to post at least every other day for 14 days for the spiders to pick find you.
I believe that with the social bookmarking available today, you can change your strategy to a post at least once a week when you’re starting out, and then increase your posting as you become more comfortable, and discover you can write quality posts more frequently.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve built several blogs into regularly read, ranked publications. By ranked, I am talking about Google Page Rank, and I measure “regularly read” by both the RSS feeds, my daily traffic, “bounce rates”, and my own metric… how many people take the actions I ask them to take vs. how many don’t take that action.

This is a good article. I would like to add that I have found that blogs longer then a week rarely get return visitors. I’ve found for my blog that an update schedule of every three days or so at the most seems to give readers plenty of time to read, think, and comment on the post. I think the update frequency is partially driven by returning visitors as well.

In as much as I’d like to post more frequently, maybe once or twice week, not being a writer takes a lot more time for me to do so. Some are just luckier than others.

Now that I’m about to complete a huge project, I’ll be able to post more frequently. I also believe quality will bring people back no matter how often they post.

Thank you for the great post. It reminded me of something I had completely forgotten about. I understand that you need to update regularly, but I completely forgot about doing it at the same time so readers can form a habit of checking. Thanks for giving this push into the right direction!
Hope you don’t mind, I will site your Article and link it for a post you just inspired! Hugs!

Good quick post, and a reminder that I am absolutely HORRIBLE at updating my blog. Now that I actually have to WORK at my job, I’m lucky if I get to update once every couple of weeks.
I really need to do something about that haha.

I’ve recently had a huge discussion with a blogger friend cum guide on how often to post. My instinct is to post often, regularly-say, thrice a week or even more. We had a consensus that if I were writing stuff that required researching and organizing the contents for better reader pleasure and if the topics are not simple rants, then a frequency of once-a-week may produce quality articles. Its got to be quality-quantity balance with regularity, to retain readers, we found. Moreover, if I did not have lot of time at my disposal, being in active, demanding day work, it made no sense to hurriedly stuff the blog up with articles out of anxiety that your readers may be expecting more from you.

I post on thee blogs at the moment but I am not very technically savvy and haven’t got enough hours in the day after dropping 1200 cards to do much else lol. I want to start article submission soon when I get a pair of hands free.

This is a great read. Thanks! I’m beginning to realize how important it is to post on a regular basis.

[...] Most bloggers though operate their blogs as a way of making either a part-time or full-time income. For these professional bloggers the most important issue for them to address is how to make their blogs attractive enough so that people not only come to visit, but become repeat visitors. One of the best ways a blogger can ensure that people will want to come back to a blog time and time again is to update it both often and regularly. [...]
