Blog promotion is one of the toughest things to master in the world of blogging. Without people visiting a
blog, there is little reason for the blogger to continue updating their blog. Without traffic, it is questionable if there is even a reason for a blog to exist. The only way to get this traffic is to promote the blog effectively so that people have both the desire and opportunity to follow a link back to the blog.
One of the best ways to promote a blog is for a blogger to comment on the posts of another blogger. This type of strategy is beneficial for a number of reasons and has the ability to pay off both at the moment it is done as well as long down the road too. It is not enough though to just comment on any blog that they come across though, a blogger should seek out blogs that post about either the same subject matter as they do or a subject that is closely related to theirs. There are a number of other tips that can go a long way in making the commenting efforts of a blogger more effective.
Make Quality Comments
It is not enough to just post a quick comment after a post saying something basic or echoing agreement. The best use of commenting is done by a blogger that is actually adding quality content in their response to a post. Pointing out something new that the original post failed to cover or expanding on that post and applying in a direction where the original blogger hadn’t are great ways to make quality comments on other people’s blogs.
Make Related Comments
Another acceptable and effective way to comment on the blog of someone else is to post comments that are related to their post or subject matter. Expanding on someone’s ideas this way brings value to their post as it means the information they provided can be used in ways that they originally hadn’t even covered.
Do Not Be So Obvious
While it is tempting when commenting on someone else’s blog to use every excuse to promote their own blog, a blogger should only link to or mention their blog when absolutely necessary. This prevents them from getting banned or having their comments not approved by the webmaster of the site that is being commented on and also makes it so the blogger appears to be genuinely trying to be helpful instead of just trying to use this new blog to promote their site.
Be Repetitive In Process, Not In Content
Being repetitive is often looked at as a negative in the world of business and communication, but when commenting on the blogs of other people it is a good thing. This doesn’t mean a blogger should state the same things over and over, in fact this is an incredibly bad thing to do. What it means is a blogger should comment on the same blogs over and over so that they become a reliable member of that blog’s community. The more their reputation builds and they are looked upon as a contributor of quality, the more chance that people will follow that blogger’s links back to their blog and possibly become a regular reader or subscriber there.
Blog commenting is one of the best way for a blogger to promote a blog. It is a way to establish the reputation of the blogger and to use helpful and informative tips and information as a way of guiding people back to the blogger’s blog to find out more information. Although blog commenting is a popular and beneficial way of blog promotion, it must be done in the right way. Appearing to be a spammer or someone who is only out for the gain of promoting their own site is one of the fastest ways to be banned, have comments sit unapproved, or have people not react in the desired way to the comments that are being left. Using common sense and being a quality comment writer is a great way for any blog owner to promote their blog.

Yes and No. Yes if we want to comment at new blog or on interesting article. No if we already build our networking. Comment can be a platform for us to communicate among friends. I always accept comment from friends even the comment not related to my article.

<that is actually true! I visit those frequent commentors, not only in my blog but from others as well.. i just think that they deserve some comments back and am happy to do it.. i however hate unrelevant comments and “i was here” comments…

I have to agree WebbieGurl - I like the comments to add a little something to the discussion.

Commenting on a post about commenting is just asking to do something wrong, but I’m going to do it anyway. From a blog reader’s standpoint I would never visit the link of someone who comments in a “me too” fashion. If someone adds something meaningful then I’m more likely to visit. So as far as blog promotion, backlinks are great, but catching people’s attention who may want to read more of what you have to say is even better.

If a friend comments on an article about something that is completely unrelated I think I would ask him/her not to do that again. We have email and other means for personal communication. I guess it depends on how professional (or not) you want your blog to be. There are some blogs that are more conversations than anything else, so I can see your point, but it would depend on the nature of the blog. As a general rule I think the author is correct.

Thanks Paul for making me laugh. What an excellent comment.
I also think you’re right on the money when talking about unrelated comments.

I’ve found some really great blogs via comments on other blogs. However, I am NEVER tempted to click to find the blog behind a “you make good point- visit my site here” style comment!
A hearty “AMEN” to a comment “adding value” and “catching attention.”
However, I also try to not “dominate” the conversation via comments. One time, I was in the middle of a 300 word comment and realized, “Hey! This should be a trackback instead of a comment!”
In other words, it’s a fine line between “contributing” and “dominating”.
I’ll stop now so I don’t do the latter! (I’m still new here - and found this blog via a comment on another blog!)

I visit a lot of blogs daily but only comment when I have something substantial to say. For me, though comments are a way to promote one’s blog, they should be used appropriately.

this is very true..commenting is really good if it will be done in a good way. Actually, I dont usually comment on blogs that I visited. I only look around if there are any pertinent info on the site. If I found something that gonna tickle my interest, then surely I’ll post a comment and more importantly I will bookmark it for future reference.

Em Dy thanks for taking the time to leave your comment here. I always enjoy getting comments on my posts. Some of them are better than the posts themselves and allow me to learn something.

Great tips. Personally, I follow the three-comment rule: which is similar to “being repetitive” in the process. Oftentimes, the author of that blog comes to check out my blog.
I find it quite irritating to read comments that are not entirely related to the post that I had written - even if I got the chatbox and the contact form up.

I would never point out someone’s mistake publicly in their blog. If the error is big, then I would recommend that you email the person off the blog so they would not be embarrassed. I think to point out mistakes just makes a person look like a jerk to everyone who reads the comments.
Also when posting a comment to someone’s blog, it’s important to re-read what you have written, to make sure it’s what you really want to say and cannot be misconstrued.
I also recommend using Google Alert to be alerted of new blog posts that are in your area of interest. This helps me post comments to a variety of really interesting blogs quickly.

[...] Commenting on other blogs in the same niche as your business blog is a great way to attract targeted visitors to your blog and ultimately to your business. Viewers to the blogs you are commenting on are already interested in your niche so are extremely likely to click on the links in your comments, especially if your comments are particularly insightful and informative or shed a new light on a certain subject. Users will soon be visiting your business blog to find a unique perspective on the subject. [...]
