In modern business, there are many situations where small companies lack the resources to compete with major corporations. Historically, big business has always used these advantages in a way to keep small businesses from excelling at a high level. This is true in almost every aspect of business including sales, shipping, transportation, advertising, purchasing, and marketing. One area where this advantage is no longer the norm is in job recruitment. There was a time when big business had a huge advantage when it came to finding the best qualified employees, but now with the widespread use of the internet by those seeking employment as well as by those advertising open positions, this is no longer the case.
Small businesses are enjoying one of the few level playing fields now when it comes to recruiting qualified employees. With a simple internet connection and the knowledge to know where to post a good old fashioned help wanted advertisement, small companies can now compete for the same high quality employees that at one time seemed destined to only work in the world of big business. A well placed online advertisement can reach an audience in the millions for a fraction of the cost, and sometimes even for free, of advertising through either a head hunter service or traditional print and video media. The advantages of advertising open job opportunities online are seemingly endless. Most users who look for work online already possess computer skills and the type of knowledge that many employers are looking for. For the most part, familiarity with the internet is essential in today’s workplace.
Another advantage searching online for prospective job candidates has is the investment that is required by the employer. There are a number of online classified sites where employers are free to post advertisements about openings they have at no cost. Many of these do not receive the amount of internet traffic that other sites requiring payment do, but are still worthwhile. Many paid job posting sites are well worth the fees charged. Often the fee for posting on these types of sites is in the $25-$75 range. The better sites in this category get a large amount of internet traffic and specialize in marketing the open positions advertised there right to the people that are looking for jobs.
There is also another way that a business can find employees online, and that is by utilizing their own web presence that they already have. Many businesses have company websites online that are meant to communicate in some way with their customers or those that they hope one day will develop into customers. By simply adding a page of content to their company site that lists job openings as well as how to apply for employment even when there isn’t a specific opening at the moment is easy, free, and very effective. This does not reach as many internet job seekers as the other types of advertising, but those that it does reach are specifically already interested in that company because they are already on that company’s website. An aggressive method similar to this would be to have the regularly updated company blog also mention that the company is at that moment searching for qualified applicants to fill a specific position or positions.
Though most internet job recruiting is done through the many popular career sites, this shouldn’t discourage small businesses as these sites are also open to them to use. With advertising a job opening also possible on a company’s website as well as in online classified advertisements, there are a number of options available for a small company to target and make contact with a good sized pool of qualified quality applicants. Small businesses have many inherent disadvantages when it comes to competing with large corporations and well established companies. When something like internet job recruitment comes up where there is finally a level playing field, small businesses are doing themselves a huge disservice if they do not take advantage of it. Once a small business lands the types of employees it has always been looking for, they can then worry about competing with the big boys in all those other categories where the playing field is not so level.
