The Pros And Cons Of Hiring From Within

The one aspect of a manager’s job that can affect the business he is working for, or owning if he is self-employed, more than any other is how he handles the hiring responsibilities. Deciding which employees to entrust with different levels of responsibility can impact a business in a number of ways that many people don’t even realize. Placing the right person in the right job can have the effect on a business of boosting it to levels that were never even dreamed of. At the same time, placing the wrong person in any position of a business can sometimes have negative ramifications that were never intended. Many times hiring or promoting from within is a great strategy for getting even more value out of an already acknowledged good employee. Sometimes though, promoting an employee from within is not the best method of filling other positions inside a company or business. Mastering the hiring process is the surest way for any manager or business owner to reach those levels of success that they always wanted.

The Pros of Hiring From Within

There are many benefits to hiring from within. In a number of cases one of the best ways to get the best results when filling a new position is by filling it with someone not entirely unfamiliar with the company. When an employee has a verifiable track record within a company, there is more information known about them and both what they know as well as what their work habits are. In many cases there are skills and traits that are put on display by an employee in one position that a supervisor may recognize as being the perfect type of employee to hold another position with more responsibility.

Another good thing about hiring from within is that those employees may not require any or as much training as employees from outside the company because they are familiar with at least the general workings of the business. Promoting from within is also a way to cultivate an environment within the company in which the employees known that they are rewarded for their hard work and extra effort. Employees that feel they have topped out or are at a dead end portion of their career may not function at a very high level in their job because they don’t see the position leading any where. Hiring from within is a sometimes very effective way of filling an upper level position with an employee that has been tested and excelled at a lower level.

The Cons of Hiring From Within

While there are many advantages to hiring or promoting from within, there are also some disadvantages. Sometimes having an established policy of promoting from within makes some employees feel that they are entitled to a promotion even when they may not be the most qualified for it. This feeling of earning a promotion purely by putting in time with a company is not the best method of hiring. This can lead to one of two negative situations, either an unqualified employee will be in a higher level position or an employee and possibly their co-workers will have resentment towards this more qualified outsider who has come into a position above them. There can also be resentment exhibited when an employee is promoted from within by other employees who feel they deserved the promotion themselves. There are also many situations where an employee may perform their duties well, but they may not be suited for the higher level position either because of a lack of education or a lack of experience in that field. Filling a position from within can sometimes be a negative when personal feelings are hurt or people end up in a position that they are not qualified for.

While no one would ever state that under no circumstances should someone be hired from within to fill an open position, it is obvious that this should not be a blanket policy. A manager or business owner needs to remember that all of their hiring decisions need to be made with the idea of strengthening the business, sometimes this means that loyal employees need to remain in their current positions because that is where they perform the best. There are occasions though where the best person for the job is in fact a person already employed with the company who can be moved up and relatively seamlessly take on the responsibilities of the new position. The simple truth is that there is no absolute rule when contemplating hiring from within, each position or promotion needs to be taken on a case-by-case basis and at all times the manager should do what is in the best interest of the company.
