The day to day operation and health of their business is understandably one of the most important things to any business owner. Finding new ways to make sure that their businesses operate at the highest level possible should be priority number one. If you own your own business, you know that there is one area of it that affects every other area and has the ability to make or break your company, that area is your staff.
Having a high quality efficient staff is one of the best ways to ensure that your business will be run as you wish it to be at every level of the company. The best way to shape your employees into the most cohesive unit possible is by first hiring the best and most qualified employees for the job openings that you have. Knowing and identifying the wrong person for the job is sometimes just as valuable as knowing and identifying the right person for the job.
Hiring The Right People
There is a lot that goes into ensuring that the person you are hiring to complete a job or fill a position in your company is the right person for the job. Though it seems simple, the biggest priority should be hiring people who have skills that match up with what positions you have open. There are really very few hiring guidelines that matter if you cannot fulfill that first one. Many times during an interview process you may come across an applicant who exhibits a great deal of the work and personality traits that you value. You may picture them as seamlessly fitting in with your current staff and being a very complimentary personality.
The problem is that if they don’t have the skill set or experience that matches up with the position you are attempting to fill, you could be doing serious damage to your company by hiring them. Hiring a good worker for a position they are not qualified for is not smart human resource management. While experience is not everything and many jobs can be taught and learned on the job, by hiring an unqualified person for the job you may also be inflicting damage on your business which cannot be easily undone. The right person for the job is someone who has experience doing the tasks that need to be done and also has the skills required to do the job correctly in the conditions of your workplace.
Don’t Hire The Wrong People
During the process of finding a new employee either to fill a vacant position or to fill a new position, there will be more opportunities to hire the wrong people than to hire the right people. While most blatant hiring errors can be avoided by simply following the step above which is to hire the most qualified person who has actual experience doing what needs to be done, sometimes it is not that simple. There may be an occasion when you post a job opening and you fail to receive any applicants that qualify in a way that you had hoped.
If this happens, the two main choices are to hold out for more applicants or hire the person that is most qualified. Another option is to juggle the responsibilities of your current employees so that the position you are now looking to fill is that of a support person for the employees who have had their responsibilities expanded upon. Hiring the wong person for the job can have negative ramifications that continue for years.
Among the other people that you shouldn’t hire under these or other circumstances include friends, people with troublesome work histories and people with long gaps in their work histories. While it may be tempting to hire friends now and then, this opens your business up to a number of potential problems and conflicts. Other employees may see this person as getting preferential treatment which could lead to a negative attitude permeating the workplace. Hiring friends can also lead to potential difficulties in the friendship you share as it may be tested once you have to exhibit the authority you now have over your friend who was once your equal.
Humans are largely creatures of habit and this is true when it comes to work history. When a potential employee has a history of getting fired or leaving a previous job under questionable at best circumstances, there is no reason to think that that type of behavior won’t continue. An applicant who has large gaps in their employment history may be showing signs of a person who either gets bored or irritated with their job if they hold it for awhile or they have trouble handling responsibility and committment and need to get away from working on a semi-regular basis. You should be looking for an employee who exhibits that they are in fact very responsible and are committed to accomplishing the assigned tasks related to the position for quite some time.
Few decisions you make will impact your business either positively or negatively more than who you hire to fill what positions. Employees handle everything from customer service to accounting to managing your other employees, therefore even their most minor job responsibilities can have a serious impact not only on your bottom line and your customers, but also your other employees. Always focusing on hiring the most qualified employee is a great way to guarantee that when an issue in your business should arise, you have the best people there to take care of the problem.
