The Story Behind Facebook's Inexplicable Popularity
If you have been alive in the past five years and have never heard about Facebook, either you have been living in the Alaskan wilderness, or you had your head in the sand. Facebook has grown from a small website being ran from a Harvard dorm room to the worlds largest social networking site with other 400 million active users.
The main reason Facebook is so popular is because it allows people to keep in touch with other people. Gone are the days when you actually had to call people on the phone to talk to them, now you simply log onto Facebook and start chatting with them. Facebook makes it extremely easy to keep track of your friends via the built in friends list. Some people spend hours on Facebook simply going through their friends' status or looking at pictures.
Another reason Facebook is so popular is because of the simplicity. No longer do you have to navigate through countless pages just come to arrive at a 404 error or become lost just to add friends. Facebook makes it very easy to add friends, delete friends or ignore people. When you first join you have the option of importing friends from various address books stored on your computer on in your email.
Besides surfing through your various friends' profiles, many people like to waste their day away playing games that are built into the site. Many of these games are very simple, but addictive. One such game is called "Farmville," where the goal is to run your own virtual farm. You may invite your friends over to your farm to help you plant crops, harvest crops or raise animals. While it may seem like a simple concept, it keeps some people glued to the screen for hours on end. There are many other games that are extremely simple. Some are more complex, however, such as poker and chess.
Another popular activity that many uses partake in is quizzes and contests. You can make a quiz with customized questions, along with answer, and then send this quiz to anybody on your friend's list. Many people get a kick out of the answers and want to make their own. Thus, the cycle continues.
Overall, there are a million and one things to do on Facebook. Whether you are looking at friends status, updating your own, uploading pictures or playing games, you will surely find something that you like about the social networking giant
