The Traveler’s Love/Hate Relationship With The Sun

When travelers head out for their vacation, whether they are as couples or entire families, there are many things that they look forward to and plan their vacation around. When a traveler selects a warm and sunny destination, as many do, they are often attracted to the destination because of the amount of activity or the amount of time they can spend out in the sun. Many destinations, whether they are urban in nature or if they are located away from developed areas, have many things to do that by their very nature place the vacationer out in the sun.

While this is one of the biggest attractions to places like Florida, California, Mexico, and Hawaii, it is also one of the things that can simply ruin a traveler who is not prepared for all that the sun has to offer. The sun can make for a warm and comfortable environment, but it can also make for some serious pain for anyone who is not used to spending an extended amount of time in it.

There are a number of things that can be done though by the traveler to lessen the impact of the sun on their skin. Wearing hats is a great way to keep the sun off of the head of a traveler. Sunglasses go a long way in preventing headaches from too much squinting, as well as making it more convenient to drive or just walk around outside. Use of an appropriate sunscreen is another way that a vacationer can protect themselves and those traveling with them from the sun. Many sunscreens are waterproof and work if the vacation activity that day involves being in the water too.

If by chance enough sun protection steps were not taken, there are also a number of things that a traveler can do to ease the pain and speed the recovery from a sunburn. Anyone suffering from a bad sunburn should prepare themselves to get some good rest, resting out of the sun is one of the first steps in recovery from a sunburn. The wearing of loose fitting clothing makes it a little more comfortable for the sufferer of a sunburn to function properly. Many pain relievers like aspirin or acetaminophen also can relieve some of the pain caused by a sunburn. Another thing that can make a sunburn feel better is to keep the body cool, including taking a bath in a tub filled with cool water.

While there are a number of ways to ease the pain of a sunburn in limited ways, there is no cure for a sunburn. The best thing a traveler can do is try to avoid situations that would lead to a sunburn. Covering exposed skin and using decent sunscreen are two steps that can help a great deal. While many vacationers seek out the sun when it comes time to go on a trip, many also have their vacations ruined to some degree because of the suffering they endure at the hands of a bad sunburn.

It’s almost summer in South Africa and i can’t wait to have some fun in the sun :) The most important thing to me is the sunscreen, Although sunglasses are just as important, to prevent damage to your eyes

So True Michael! The sun can be brutal on the eyes too. I have had two cataract surguries now and am only 41. Mine was more a family history, but keep some good shades on anyway.

The very best sun protection is pure, virgin coconut oil. Rub all over your exposed skin and I promise you will not sunburn.

I have a series of post that I did on my blog about the benefits of coconut oil if you are interested.

Love to share, and thanks for the post.
