For a business or an individual department of a business to achieve the success that is desired, it needs to be taken seriously by both the workers who operate it and the clients that patronize it. In most cases, the manager is the face of either the business or the department and the same rule applies to them. When a business or manager is not taken seriously it falls into a trap where the employees do not give one hundred percent when it comes to their job performance, and clients don’t think of the business in the same lofty terms that they may think of the competition. There are tips though that a manager can use so that both they and the business as a whole are taken more seriously.
Be taken more seriously by your employees:
1. Limit socialization.
2. Don’t request personal favors.
3. Show up to work on time and do not leave early.
4. When warranted, accept the blame for mistakes and problems.
5. Don’t be “above” any job.
When an employee sees that their manager is willing to put in the same amount of work as they are expected to, then they are usually more than willing to do what it takes to get the job done in a more professional manner. When an employee sees their manager function with a high level of responsibility and fairness, they will usually take everything the manager says more seriously.
Be taken more seriously by your clients:
1. Adhere to agreed upon deliveries.
2. Don’t be a “Yes Man”.
3. Don’t talk down about your fellow managers and employees.
4. Accept the blame when something goes wrong.
5. Don’t discuss not liking your job.
When a client sees that a manager has their business not only running well but also operating efficiently and responsibly, they are more apt to value both the product or service as well as respect the manager more than if the business operated less professionally. For a client to think more highly of a manager or business, that business or manager simply has to act more professional and prove that they are deserving of the respect they desire.
If a manager feels that they are not getting the respect that they deserve, there is probably a very good reason for it. Generally, most people get the exact amount of respect that their behavior deserves. Many people are not even aware that some of the traits that they can exhibit are looked down upon in the business world. When a smart manager examines their own behavior and improves it to a more professional level, they cannot help but get more respect from everyone around them, including both clients and their employees.
