Using Your Blog To Market Yourself

In this day and age it is becoming more and more popular to blog about a wide range of topics. Your search for a job is no different. Blogs can either be used to document your search, or coincide with it to provide valuable ways in which to market yourself and your skills. Here are some tips when it comes to blogging through your job search.

The most obvious way in which to use the internet during a job search is to create a personal site that can hold all details relevant to you finding your perfect job, from your resume to a portfolio. Often, a blog can be the easiest platform by which to do this as it provides an easily-updatable option and many blog packages are free to use. This site can become a great place to point to for potential employers who need samples, for example, as all the information should be available in one place.

Another advantage to creating your own blog when searching for a job is not just to market the resume you put up there, but to implicitly make employers aware of other skills. For example, it may be very impressive for future employers to see that you had the knowledge to make your own website to begin with. They will see that you have experience with computers, the internet and blogs in particular. For this reason, it is a good idea to make sure that your blog is reasonably well-designed and formatted.

Another option is to write a blog that documents your job search. This can prove a great way to subtly include your strengths and skills, whilst at the same time chronicling your success or failures in a way that is interesting and easy to read. Creating blogs documenting job searches is an increasing trend these days, and it can give you more exposure. However, be careful not to negatively report on certain companies or interviews if there is a chance that they might find out by reading your blog.

Not only can you use a blog to show off your skills and your resume, but you may also include reference to your blog on resumes that you send to potential employers in job applications. This can be a great way to give an employer an idea of your skills, but make sure that the blog is relevant. For example, linking to a personal blog might show them you have certain writing skills, but the content included in your blog may be irrelevant or even detrimental to you getting the job. You don’t want future employees to see when you are partying a lot, or read any negative comments you may have made about their company and your search for a job. It is best to keep personal blogs separate from your resume, and use a specifically created job search blog if you wish.

In general it can be a great idea to market your skills through creating a blog. The key is to always be careful about what you write, and bear in mind that it may be read by anyone. You must also ensure that your blog or website is not the only means by which you expect to find work, and continue an active search alongside your blog for the best chances of finding a job.

This is some great information. In today’s world, if you don’t have an online presence, you just might miss the boat.

Blogs are great marketing tools for any business -even when that business is marketing your own unique skills in trying to get a j-o-b!

It’s one of the new realities of life - even people who want to work for others need a blog!
