What You Need To Know Now That You’re In Management

It may be on a large scale in a major corporation, a medium scale in a small company, or a small scale in a home or microbusiness, but every person ever placed into the role of management was at one time a first-time manager. The job of managing people in the workplace or a team of professionals differs greatly from the role of a lower level employee, and often first-time managers aren’t equipped or fully trained to tackle those differences. There are a number of things that a first-time manager needs to be aware of that so that they will have the best chance at success in their new position.

The number one job of a manager is assembling the best team possible for undertaking the tasks assigned to that department. this starts with the recruitment and hiring of new employees. It is important that a manager possess the ability to identify and cultivate promising employees who can make a positive impact on the workplace. A good tip for a first-time manager to more easily navigate the hiring process is to not just evaluate the applicants on their abilities, but also keep in mind that they will be needing to match up the abilities of incoming employees with particular jobs that need to be done. In this way, the manager avoids falling into the trap of hiring good employees, but employees that are not matched up well with the job that needs to be filled.

Once employees are hired or teams are assembled, it is time to build a working environment that will make accomplishing the goals of the company easier. While the most common way to motivate employees is through good pay and benefits, there are a number of other things that employees value as well. As long as it doesn’t interfere with the operations of the business, altering the work schedule so that it is more flexible is a way to offer employees something that they cannot find working elsewhere and something that has a better than reasonable chance of having a positive affect on their home or social life.

Open communication is another workplace benefit that employees value highly. When a worker feels like they can go to their manager about anything, they will be given a chance to speak their mind, and the manager will listen and give credence to what the employee is thinking, they will value their workplace higher than if they were in a work environment that discouraged communication between management and employees.

There are a number of other ways to help create positive work environment, some will work in some businesses while some will work better in others. Showing appreciation for work done well and congratulating employees on completed projects can go a long way in creating an environment that employees look forward to coming to. A good manager should also show concern for their employees’ health, happiness, and overall well being. Showing respect and loyalty towards team members are more ways that a manager can go about creating an atmosphere where workers feel like they are valued. Certain employees excel in a situation where they are given responsibility and decision making power, those employees should be encouraged and rewarded with exactly what makes them better workers, more responsibility.

Once the team is assembled and the environment has been created, it is time to begin accomplishing what it is the company demands of this group. A first-time manager needs know that not all employees get the job done simply because that is what is expected of them. Employee motivation is an important task that all managers should consider as part of their job. Guiding employees through steps that would improve their job performance is a great way for a manager to make a positive impact on their team. Many times employees either don’t really know what is expected from them or think that they know a better way to accomplish what the company has needs done. A first-time manager needs to know that should these situations arise, these employees are in need of coaching and guidance to get back on track. A large part of a manager’s job is encouragement and course correction so that the tasks that need to be completed are done so efficiently and on time.

When a manager is doing their job well they will have an efficient team assembled and working in a way that meets all the goals that the company has set for that department. To be a successful manager, a first-time manager needs to learn quickly that their job description is literally doing whatever it takes so that their team performs the tasks assigned to it with a high level of quality and reliability. When a manager creates a work environment that promotes long term employment so that job turnover is minimized, they are in effect creating a workplace where employees look forward to showing up and doing their job well. From coaching, to guiding, to counseling, a first-time manager needs to know that they will be wearing many hats while they attempt to keep their team performing at a high level.
