Why a Freelance Writer Must Also Be a Business Person Too

A freelance writing career may in fact be possible for you. A successful freelance writer has both a passion and talent for communicating through written words. There are many traits that would help a freelance writer be successful including creativity, thoroughness, attention to detail, persistence, objectivity, and more. One area though that many prospective freelance writers fall short in is realizing that their chosen career means that they are also a business person.

A successful freelance writer needs to have many of the same skills that a successful business person has. The main reason for this is because a freelance writer’s career is a business. There are a number of things that apply to both a standard business and the career of a freelance writer.

Marketing

Whether a freelance writer attempts to sell his skills to those in the marketplace or if he instead chooses to produce completed pieces and then sell those works, he must be an adept marketer. A freelance writer needs to be able to both market their product or skills to potential customers as well as sell their services once contact with a potential client has been made. A freelance writer who has not found a market for their skills or product, in fact doesn’t have a freelance writing career at all.

Production

One of the biggest benefits to choosing a career as a freelance writer is the flexible schedule it allows. Many people are not disciplined enough to handle this though and because of that they end up not producing enough material to make a proper living. In a more standard occupation there are goals, deadlines, and expectations that an employee must meet in order to keep their job. In the career of a freelance writer there is only the writer himself and he must be able to accomplish a certain amount of production without having someone overseeing his job performance.

Administration

While a company that provides a service will usually have an in-house accounting department to both pay bills and process incoming payments, freelance writers will generally have to perform these and other administrative duties themselves. On the basic level required by most freelance writers, these are not difficult tasks to master, although they can be quite time consuming as well as seemingly unrelated to the actual writing process.

While being a freelance writer comes with many advantages, among them a flexible schedule and the freedom to steer one’s own career on the course of their choosing, to have a truly successful writing career a freelance writer must also perform the duties of a business owner. The benefits of a freelance writing career can only be fully enjoyed when the writer realizes that there is more to the job than just writing, that there are also business world type responsibilities that need to be taken care of and that may not be as glamorous or desirable as the writing itself.

A freelance writing career can be an enjoyable and rewarding profession for anyone with the proper skill set to choose for themselves, but they also need to know going into it that there are tasks that will need their attention that are not on the surface related to being a writer.

I’d like to add “lead generation” to this list. Many writers that are new to freelancing don’t understand the differentiation between marketing yourself as a “brand” and generating leads for paying assignments.
