Why You Should Always Check A Prospective Employee’s References

One instance that impacts a business more than any other is the hiring of new employees. Employees are the people that are entrusted to make the company run on a daily basis. It may be the business owner or upper management that choose the direction of the company, but is the employees that work to make it move in that direction.

A good employee can have an amazing affect on a business. They can not only be expected to do their job well, they are also not a drain on the business as they show up for work when scheduled to be there and often go the extra mile to help out the business and their fellow co-workers. Identifying would-be good employees is a skill that every employer or human resource manager should master.

A bad employee on the other hand not only fails to do their job, they also can have an incredibly negative affect on the business as a whole and their fellow co-workers in particular. A bad employee can make more work for the people around them and cause a negative attitude to infiltrate and overtake the workplace. Identifying those types of people that would be bad employees is important at both the time of hiring and also later on when current employees could develop into bad employees.

A step in the hiring process that can help to eliminate the hiring of bad employees, but is astonishingly overlooked at times, is the simple effort it takes to check a prospective employee’s references. While references sometimes don’t mean a great deal because they can either be being given by a friend of the applicant, or may contain no information about them that is of value, it is still important to check them anyway. There are so many small and big things that can be found out about a prospective employee by simply checking there references, that it is a step that should never be passed over. Often, an employer will not check references because they either know the applicant or have come to the conclusion that the applicant can be trusted. Still other times the person responsible for doing the hiring process may not check references because they feel they lack the time that it takes.

Some of the reasons that references should be checked are that the applicant could be lying about any or all aspects of their previous employment, they may have exagerated their previous responsibilities or accomplishments, or they may not disclosing the full truth about the reason they became separated from their last job. While not all previous employers will be one hundred percent forthcoming, sometimes for good reason, regarding a former employer, because of the importance of the role that the applicant will have with the new company, everything possible about their background should be checked out for accuracy. If an applicant is being deceitful about one part of their past, they may be being deceitful about other things too. They may even exercise deceitful and dishonest work practices should they be hired by the new employer.

Checking the references of an applicant is an important safety step that every person involved in the hiring process should ensure does not go overlooked. The ramifications of hiring a poor employee are huge enough that taking the simple step of checking references are an obvious necessity.
