With the state of the economy, many people are turning to the internet as a way to either replace their full time employment or to supplement their income. There is a lot of information online about how people can make money online by blogging. While it is possible to make money blogging, it isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do. There are a number of ways to make money blogging, everything from selling ads to getting involved with paid posting programs. None of these will payoff in the long run though unless there is already traffic going to what should be a worthwhile blog.
The best way to monetize a blog is to put an income stream in place on it so that people coming to read the information there have an opportunity to either click on related text links or buy a product. The problem that many beginner bloggers have though is that they start trying to put income streams on their blog before there is any worthwhile content there. People visit blogs to read informative posts, be entertained and maybe learn something they didn’t know. They don’t visit blogs to click on ads, though that is what many blog owners want them to do. Until a blog has quality content on it, there is no reason for traffic to come to it.
Beginner bloggers should first focus on regularly updating the content of their blog. With this constant addition of content to the site, the blog becomes a valuable resource that may contain information that visitors find worthwhile. Once the reputation of the blog increases as a good source of information, that level of traffic will increase too. It is when the traffic starts to increase that a bigger emphasis can be put on monetization. Monetizing a blog too soon can actually do more harm than good as it could establish the blog’s reputation as just another source of advertisements. Waiting for a larger amount of content to be on the blog before any monetization strategy is in place helps the blog keep some of it’s credibility.
In the excitement of starting a new blog and thinking of the money that can be made off of it, many beginner bloggers monetize it too soon. Visitors to this new blog may see more advertisements than content and be immediately turned off by that. They may not come back again because of what they see. There is a correct time to monetize every blog or website on the internet, but to do so early can put the blog in a hole that it is hard to climb out of.

Great post and advice all new bloggers need to follow. I came to this realization about six months after I launched my blog. I would also add that new bloggers should work on building their sphere of influence by way of social networks.

I totally agree. The blog that I do make some $$ off of I did not start off to do that. I even paid a writer for content and didn’t make anything. Get great content and visitors/comments and then think about how to monetize.

Good post and great advice. I recently removed ads from my blog and I’ve been around for a while. I want to spend 2009 building traffic, gaining subscribers and making friends. I’ll look at ad and affiliate money in 2010 if I feel the blog is ready.
